biography

Dr Orestis Georgiou is an author of 6 patents, 2 books, and 100+ academic papers that have been published in leading journals and conferences of Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering and Medicine. He has also been co-awarded R&D grants in excess of €10 million, including a Marie Curie Individual Fellowship, and is the recipient of the prestigious 2019 IEEE Heinrich Hertz award. Finally, as Head of R&D Partnerships at Ultraleap, he is passionate about haptic technologies, networks, and spatial XR computing and oversees all our external R&D collaboration activities and grant-funded projects.

Orestis Georgiou formula

Pick a number at random between a and b. Repeat this n times. Plot a histogram (density) of the resulting numbers and you will find that it follows this distribution which I proved using Fourier analysis together with my PhD supervisor Prof Carl Dettmann.

MY FIRST THEOREM

Orestis Georgiou's first book: 'Ultra Mid-Air Haptics for Touchless Interfaces'

MY FIRST book

This book delves into mid-air haptics via ultrasound phased arrays, introducing pioneering human-computer interaction (HCI) paradigms. It’s a collaborative masterpiece, co-edited with William Frier, Euan Freeman, Claudio Pacchierotti, and Takayuki Hoshi, and includes insights from over 30 field experts. As the first comprehensive resource on this topic, it has significantly influenced a global community of scientists and engineers dedicated to advancing haptic technology.

Orestis Georgiou's publications

my scientific PUBLICATIONS

With over 100 scientific articles to my name, my body of work is a testament to deep, collaborative efforts with over 50 colleagues from varied disciplines, each bringing unique expertise and perspectives that enrich our findings. I take immense pride in these publications; many are highly cited, proving their value and utility to researchers worldwide, continually fueling further exploration and discovery in numerous scientific fields. Additionally, my adeptness in writing has not only advanced specific scientific fields but also spotlighted them for critical examination, understanding, and practical use by others.

R&D Management

Expertise

R&D Manager

My 15-year journey across academic and industry settings, both large and small, has sharpened my strategic and practical skills, making me an expert in leading complex technology and research projects. With a solid background in Maths and Physics and hands-on experience in cutting-edge technology development like 5G, smart IoT, ultrasonics, haptics, AR/VR and AI, I can effectively build and manage R&D programs, engage with universities and other industries, recruit and direct skilled teams of PhDs and engineers, and work towards transforming theoretical research into tangible, innovative IP and commercial solutions in a variety of sectors.

R&D Speaker and Communicator

I’ve communicated my science to over 50 academic conferences, organised international workshops, chaired panels, and delivered invited tutorial presentations including a keynote to 500 engineering students. These experiences have equipped me with the skills and knowhow to tailor R&D delivery to different stakeholders and at different levels of detail, length, and complexity, both in spoken and written formats. From large groups of engineers and academics who want to know more about the “how”, to bite-sized information nuggets to executives who want to know the “why” and the “so what”. Importantly, my work across cultures from America to Europe to Asia has deepened my understanding of business communication nuances, ensuring effective engagement with a global audience.

R&D Management Book

Delving into the art of R&D management, a field often learned on the job with little formal training, this 200-page book aims to equip readers with practical knowledge and insights. Recognizing the deep end that many new managers are thrown into, together with my co-authors Mykola Maksymenko and Stephen Russo, we've worked to combine our diverse personal experiences with carefully selected case studies and a comprehensive summary of extensive literature. The result, and our ambition is that  everyone who reads this book learns something new, begins to see new opportunities for positive change within their workplace, and becomes a better R&D manager.

Orestify

Orestify aims to accelerate innovation and enable me to do more. Through this consulting project of mine, I offer two types of services to help other people’s ideas, get funded, and engage in R&D activities.

R&D Grant Funding

There are many grant writing consultancies out there, but Orestify is different. This is because I’ve personally written, been awarded, reviewed, and delivered multiple R&D projects. Therefore I specialise in crafting compelling grant applications that not only enhance your chances of securing funding, but that also you will want to actually work on and deliver. My services cover the entire process from defining project objectives to writing and submitting the proposal, typically within a month's timeframe.

R&D Consultancy

After securing a grant, or if you already have a project running,  I can also serve as an outsourced (fractional) R&D Director, helping to set up and manage your R&D team, ensuring that your project aligns with strategic goals and adheres to funding requirements. This comprehensive approach not only lowers the risk and cost of internal R&D efforts but also fosters innovation and broadens your company's technological capabilities.
